Citadel Base Balthasar Gold is a dark, aged gold base paint - the foundation for gold armour schemes in the Citadel range. Richer and deeper than the brighter finishing golds, it reads as ancient, battle-worn precious metal rather than freshly polished ceremonial armour. It covers over dark primer strongly and provides the depth that subsequent highlights build against.
Apply as the gold basecoat on Space Marine shoulder pad trim, ancient armour decorations, Chaos gold fittings and any gold element that should read as deep rather than garish. Layer Gehenna's Gold, Liberator Gold and Auric Armour Gold progressively above it for highlights. A wash of Agrax Earthshade deepens the recesses before highlighting to increase the antique quality.
The go-to starting point for gold in most Citadel colour recipes - the deep base means subsequent highlights have maximum contrast. Works equally well for decorative armour trim and as the primary colour for bronze and dark gold schemes.
