1. The Horus Heresy: Horus Rising

If you want to understand *why* the universe is so messed up, you have to go back 10,000 years to the Horus Heresy. Horus Rising by Dan Abnett is the perfect starting point. It introduces the Emperor, the heroic Space Marine Legions at their absolute peak, and the tragic, galaxy-shattering betrayal that dooms humanity. It is essential reading.

2. Eisenhorn: Xenos

Want a break from the massive Space Marine battles? Dan Abnett’s Eisenhorn series reads like a grimdark sci-fi detective noir. It follows Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn as he hunts down heretics, aliens, and daemons in the dark underbelly of the Imperium. It provides an incredible street-level view of what life is actually like for regular humans in 40k.

3. Dark Imperium

If you want to jump straight into the “modern” timeline of 10th Edition 40k, start with Guy Haley’s Dark Imperium. It covers the return of the Primarch Roboute Guilliman, the introduction of the Primaris Space Marines, and the devastating Plague Wars against the forces of Nurgle.
