Beyond the Paintbrush
If you want to build and paint miniatures without losing your mind (or a finger), having the right tools is just as important as choosing the right shade of green for your Orks. A well-equipped hobby desk speeds up your workflow and ensures your expensive plastic kits look flawless before a single drop of paint touches them.
The Holy Trinity of Assembly
- Flush-cut Sprue Clippers: Do not twist parts off the sprue with your bare hands unless you want huge, ugly divots in your Space Marine’s shoulder pad. A sharp pair of flush clippers cuts cleanly against the plastic, minimising cleanup time.
- The Hobby Knife (Scalpel): Essential for scraping away the tiny mould lines that run along the sides of plastic components. A sharp blade is actually safer than a dull one, as it requires less force.
- Plastic Glue (Cement): Unlike superglue, which just sticks two surfaces together, plastic cement actually melts and welds the plastic components together, creating an unbreakable bond.
Lighting and Posture
Do not underestimate the power of a good desk lamp. Painting in dim, yellow ceiling light will ruin your eyes and make your colour choices look completely different in daylight. Invest in a bright, daylight-balanced LED lamp. Oh, and sit up straight! The “hobby hunch” is a very real, back-breaking phenomenon.
Once your desk is set up and your models are built, head over to our Citadel Paints section to bring them to life.
